Culture et Barbarie

Nov '14

Publication celebrating the 100th issue of Lebanese Francophone cultural newspaper: L’Orient Litteraire. I worked closely with the editor in the conception and execution of this monochrome publication, in which we commissioned twenty eight Lebanese and international writers—including one caricaturist—to write, and draw, pieces around today’s relevant notions of Culture and Barbarism. It was distributed at the Beirut Francophone Book Fair in 2014 during a conference around the same topic. For the accustomed readers of the newspaper, this free 136-page publication stands out with a new format, a different color scheme and original typographic choices, thus moving away from the standard newspaper graphic treatment. As it is visible on the cover, we reveal the established newspaper grid while superimposing the new design on top of it. Under the editor’s guidance, we carefully selected images from the newspaper archive. These images, although differing by theme and topic, are combined together on the same spread while being separated from their captions, thus allowing the reader the freedom of making—or not making—interpretations and associations. By placing captions on other pages, we try to dissociate visuals from their fixed meanings.
