Deconstructing Manhattan

Dec '16

Deconstructing Manhattan is a personal self-published project. It is inspired by the first three-minute opening montage of Woody Allen’s Manhattan, in which the author narrates his varying impressions of New York as he stumbles to reflect his feelings of the city in a single introduction. This work resonates with many who face conflicting perceptions towards Beirut. This publication, creating a parallel between Beirut and Woody Allen’s idea of Manhattan, features original contributions from 13 local artists creating essays, poems, illustrations, and photographs expressing dissimilar personal interpretations of the city. All the gathered content about Beirut is divided into five sections corresponding to the five different readings of Manhattan narrated in the beginning of the film.
